Tarte Tarteist x MakeupShayla Contour Palette ($45), is a six color contour palette created to satisfy the sculpting needs of darker complexions. The palette was created in collaboration with MakeupShayla, a popular LA based makeup artist, who sprung to stardom on Instagram. The contour palette is nicely packaged and is travel friendly. However, I do wish that there was more of MakeupShayla’s personality present. I would have liked to have seen some special packaging or color, to let us know (besides the name and it being “Titus approved”-who is her dog) that MakeupShayla helped put this palette together.

As for the product inside, the powders are soft and pigmented. They applied to the skin effortlessly and did not fade throughout the day. I also found them to be buildable. The blush color was a disappointment as a true blush color on my skintone. The six shades do not have names, but are noted by number and function both inside the palette and on the back. They are as follows:

  • Shade 1: Highlight. This color is described as a matte highlight, but I find it to be more of a satin. It softens lines and also can illuminate the face.
  • Shade 2: Correct. This is a pale/yellow correcting powder to neutralize redness. Considering this contour palette is for deeper skintones, I’m left to wonder why there is no orange tint instead. I used it under the eyes to brighten them or as a brow bone highlight color.
  • Shade 3: Soft/Deep Contour. I like that there are two cool tone contour shades. The deeper shade I use to sculpt my face and the lighter shade I use on my nose because it’s not as harsh.
  • Shade 5: Accentuate. This is a soft, rosy blush shade. It’s more of a natural flush of color. However, as an eyeshadow, it’s beautiful.
  • Glow. This is the center color that’s like a soft bronze. It’s a subtle highlighter that’s more natural looking. I wish it had more vibrancy and pop to it.

Ultimately, I think this collaboration was a success. The Tart Tarteist X MakeupShayla Contour Palette performs well throughout the day and did not fade. This palette is perfect for those who are just starting out with contour, because everything you need is in one palette. This palette is limited edition and can be found at Sephora.com or Ulta.com.
